Scooter Batteries – What you should know

PGM Knowledge Base

1. The Most Common Cause: Incorrect Charging

The number one reason batteries fail early is improper charging.

Common mistakes include:

  • Not charging after every use
  • Leaving the battery partially charged
  • Storing the scooter without regular charging
  • Unplugging too early
  • Using a non-approved charger

Mobility scooter batteries should be:

✔ Charged after every use

✔ Left plugged in overnight when needed

✔ Topped up even if only used briefly

Unlike car batteries, mobility batteries prefer regular full charging cycles.

2. Leaving the Scooter Unused for Too Long

If a scooter sits unused for weeks or months without charging, the batteries can sulphate (internally degrade).

This leads to:

  • Reduced capacity
  • Shorter travel range
  • Complete failure

If you’re not using your scooter regularly, charge it at least once every week.

3. Cold Weather Damage

Batteries do not perform well in cold temperatures.

In winter, you may notice:

  • Reduced travel range
  • Slower acceleration
  • Faster discharge

Cold weather does not permanently damage batteries immediately, but repeated exposure without proper charging shortens lifespan.

Store your scooter:

  • Indoors where possible
  • In a dry, insulated area
  • Away from frost

4. Old Batteries Reaching End of Life

Most mobility scooter batteries last:

  • 12–24 months on average
  • Less if heavily used
  • Less if poorly maintained

Signs batteries are wearing out:

  • Reduced range even after full charge
  • Scooter cutting out unexpectedly
  • Battery indicator dropping quickly
  • Taking much longer to charge

If your scooter is over 18 months old and hasn’t had battery replacement, this may be the cause.

5. Loose Connections or Electrical Issues

Sometimes the battery itself isn’t the problem.

We often see:

  • Loose terminal connections
  • Corroded wiring
  • Faulty charging ports
  • Damaged cables

These issues can mimic battery failure but require professional diagnosis.

6. Charger Problems

Not all charging issues are battery-related.

Possible causes:

  • Faulty charger
  • Incorrect charger model
  • Damaged plug or fuse
  • Charging port malfunction

If the charger light behaves unusually (not turning green, flashing irregularly), it’s worth getting it tested.

7. Overloading the Scooter

If the scooter regularly carries more than its recommended weight limit, batteries work harder and drain faster.

Check:

  • The maximum user weight rating
  • Whether additional bags or equipment are increasing load
  • Whether hills are part of regular travel

Consistent overloading shortens battery lifespan significantly.

8. Driving Style & Terrain

Battery drain increases if:

  • You frequently drive uphill
  • You accelerate sharply
  • You drive long distances daily
  • You use full speed regularly

Class 3 road scooters generally consume more power at 8mph than pavement speeds.

If range seems reduced, terrain may be a contributing factor.

How to Extend Battery Life

To protect your batteries:

✔ Charge after every use

✔ Avoid letting batteries fully drain

✔ Store indoors where possible

✔ Use the correct charger

✔ Have batteries tested annually

✔ Keep connections clean and secure

Routine servicing helps identify battery issues before breakdown occurs.

When Should You Replace Batteries?

Consider replacement if:

  • Range has reduced significantly
  • Scooter is over 18–24 months old
  • It struggles on short journeys
  • It cuts out unexpectedly

Battery replacement is far cheaper than emergency breakdown recovery.

Can You Replace Mobility Scooter Batteries Yourself?

While technically possible, we recommend professional installation.

Reasons:

  • Correct battery type must be fitted
  • Incorrect fitting can damage controller systems
  • Warranty issues may arise
  • Electrical safety matters

Professional fitting ensures safe performance.

Why Regular Servicing Prevents Battery Failure

During servicing, we:

  • Load-test batteries
  • Check charging systems
  • Inspect wiring
  • Identify early warning signs

Many battery failures can be predicted months in advance.

That’s why annual servicing is so important.
